NW Fly Tyer and Fly Fishing Expo

Spey Plate - 2013

One classic pattern. Multiple interpretations from a variety of talented tyers. Tastefully mounted together in a giant framed shadowbox. What do you have? The Spey Plate. And what a collection it is!

Originated some years ago by John Shewey, the Spey Plate has been one of the most soughtafter items at the annual auction held during the banquet at the NW Fly Tyers Expo. The premise was simple: John would select a Spey fly pattern - antique or modern, well-known classic or obscure gem -invite a few of his tying friends to tie it, and then mount the results for some lucky bidder to claim. John passed the duties of ringleader to Rich Youngers a few years ago who carried on the tradition in grand fashion creating such memorable plates as the Black Dog and one featuring all 16 patterns from Knox's iconic work Autumns on the Spey.

Last year Rich handed the reins to Monte Smith who enthusiastically embraced the challenge. Monte selected the Pitcroy Fancy and rounded up flies from 25 talented tyers, including one from noted salmon fly author Mike Radencich. The Spey Plate was the highest grossing item at the auction, once again representing a truly unique piece of tying art.

The fly this year is the Dallas Fly and promises to be another grand display. Don't miss your opportunity to own a piece of tying history!
